Turtle Conservation Gili Trawangan

Sightseeing Tours

The Gili Islands are a prime area for marine turtle conservation. The purpose of the sanctuary is to save turtle eggs from predators and ensure that the turtles can nest and hatch safely.

If you wish to swim with the graceful sea turtles, Gili Trawangan would be the perfect spot to head to, thanks to the conservation efforts on the island. Here you can find critically endangered hawksbills and green sea turtles swimming in the warm waters around the island all year round, making it a favorite spot for divers and snorkelers.

The island is home to a growing turtle conservation project that was set up by the residents of Gili Trawangan. They receive government funding to an extent, but their main source of support is from tourists who visit and donate to the project. With the help of these donations, the project has been able to purchase an egg incubator and has three small pools for the safety of turtle hatchlings.

The Trust also contributes towards re-growing coral reefs, encouraging turtles back to the area and keeping eggs safe on the beaches while they incubate.
