Enter a mystical world of hundreds of stunning cherry blossom trees as you walk along the Philosopher’s Walk, a pleasant stone path that runs along a canal in the Higashiyama district.

A walk rightfully named Philosopher's Walk, this pleasant, stoned road runs along side a canal and gifts tourists a sight of hundreds of cherry blossom trees that bloom in a myriad of colors throughout the year. In the month of April however, these trees burst into colors making this path one of the most beautiful and sought after hanami, or cherry blossom viewing spots in the country. Though the path was named after one of Japan’s most famous philosophers, Nishida Kitaro, who used to practice meditation when walking through the path, tourists themselves will feel a sense of calm and tranquility descend on them as they walk through the silence. Along with a number of quaint shrines and temples, the path is also lined by a range of shops, cafes and boutiques to add to the experience of walking through old-town Kyoto.

12:00 AM - 12:00 AM

Good to know

  • The path has several souvenir shops and cafes along the way, where you can pick up some gifts to take home as memories.
  • Some of the shrines/temples along the way have an additional entrance fee.
