Shinjuku Gyoen is one of Japan’s largest and most popular parks both among residents and tourists. Iconic for its spread of cherry blossom trees which cover the entire park during the month of spring, the park provides a relaxing escape from Tokyo’s bustle.

Home to a large number and variety of cherry trees and other floral trees, Shinjuku Gyoen is one of the most popular tourist spots in Tokyo, primarily because of the stunning canopy of multi-colored leaves and flowers that take over the park in the month of March and April. More than 400 somei yoshino trees blossom around the English style gardens turnings the lawns into one of Tokyo’s most popular and pleasant hanami spots. For those who miss viewing the cherry blossoms in bloom, the park offers numerous early and late blooming cherry trees which provide extended cherry blossom viewing season.

During autumn, the entire park takes up an entirely different range of colors when the leaves change. There are innumerable varieties of trees that change colors around the park but the maple trees are particularly beautiful to behold and can be seen in large numbers on the park’s eastern side.
