Travel back in time as you step into this archaeological site which boasts of 47 standing buildings. The El Rey is one of the oldest standing villages in Mexico and is at par with the great Chichen Itza and Tulum ruins in terms of culture and heritage.


Dating back to 250 AD, the El Rey Mayan ruins are a testimony to the culture and heritage of the ancient Mayan culture showcasing life in a typical village or city. The 47 standing structures include temples, trade areas and markets many of which still stand fully erect in all their glory. The El Rey is a quick stop in the Hotel Zone where you can travel back in time while walking through the different parts of the city and understand life in the village with the help of your guided tour. the area also has lots of iguanas that you can observe along with several species of local birds.

  • There is an extra charge of 45 pesos for every digital camera/Go Pro/drone carried.
  • The ruins are in the southern range of the Hotel Zone and can be reached by taxi, tour or travel bus.
  • We recommend you to carry an umbrella or a hat, biodegradable sunscreen and wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
