Overview

Explore the ancient caves of Curacao, located just a few minutes from Curacao International Airport. More than 2 hundred thousand years old, these ancient limestone caves used to serve as shelter for Amerindian Arawaks and Caiquetio Indians.

Description

Holding a major significance in the slave history of Curaçao these ancient caves are located at the north side of the island and closer to the international airport of Curaçao. Filled with nature's artwork in the form of its limestone formations and natural wilderness, these 2 hundred thousand years old rock caves are prominent geographical landmark. During early days of slave trades in the island, the slaves used to run and take shelter of these huge caves to hide. The caves used to be home of the Amerindians Arawaks. An adventurous Indian Trail takes you to the ancient carvings and signs made on the walls by Caiquetio Indians more than 1500 years ago. Eerie and dimly lit, the cave filled with stalagmites and stalactites, jutting from ground and roof.
