Also known as Cathedral of America, the Catedral Primada de América is the first cathedral of the Americas and is visited by millions of tourists throughout the year.


A landmark Catholic church in Santo Domingo, the Catedral Primada de América dates back to mid-1500s, with its first stone set in 1514, the oldest in the western hemisphere. The cathedral is famed for its vaulted interiors and limestone façade and construction was initiated by Diego Columbus, son of explorer, Christopher Columbus. Touring the interiors will reveal the cathedral’s colonial era oil paintings, ornate gothic ceilings, gravestones of archbishops and sacred chapel rooms. The 500-year old continues to serve as a vital spot for religious ceremonies and official events. Daily masses are also held at the cathedral from Monday to Saturday at 5PM and on Sundays at 12PM and 5PM.
