Overview

Located in the famed Colonial District of Santo Domingo, Museo de las Casas Reales is one of the most important monuments of the colonial era in Dominican Republic. The monument is a conglomeration of three colonial houses and serves as a museum.

Description

The Casa Reales was originally built in 1508 and now serves as an informative museum. What was originally the seat of Spanish authority, serving as Governor’s office and the Royal Court, the monument now showcases a whole range of colonial-era items, including precious treasures obtained from sunken Spanish galleons. The building stands as a beacon of the colonial era not just because of its architecture but the significance it held in Spanish history. Detailed maps of voyages of European explorers and conquistadors are exhibited on the walls and military weapons and canons from the era still stand intact in many parts of the museum.
