Stretching along the marshlands of Trelawny from the small community of Rock to the town of Falmouth, the Luminous Lagoon is home to millions of dinoflagellates- a type of algae that cause the lagoon to sparkle and glisten when disturbed at night, thereby reflecting the outlines of fish and other objects in the water.

Known to be one of the largest and most brilliant of four in the world, the Luminous Lagoon leaves visitors and scientists spellbound, from all around the world. The lagoon is home to a host of microorganisms called dinoflagellates, which thrive in the layers where salt and fresh water combine and glow in shallow, warm water.

Visitors can choose to go here as part of a tour to experience a boat ride through the illuminated lagoon. You can dip your hand or foot in the water to see it light up around you and watch fish swim around as the blue light surrounds them. You can also get to jump out and swim, your body surrounded by the luminous green glow.
