Explore Canggu with our pick of the top 5 things to do

Canggu is a surfing town north of Seminyak that also happens to be very popular among expats living the nomadic life. The most popular activity in this dazzling beach town is surfing, but like most places in Bali, you can also get a good massage, practice some yoga and tuck into great Indonesian street food.

Here are the top five things to do in Canggu, Bali:

  1. Go surfing at Batu Bolong or Berawa Beach

Canggu’s beaches offer many types of waves for surfing, whether you’re a beginner or an expert. If you have no idea what to do with a surfing board, join one of the many Canggu surf schools and learn to ride the waves. Personal coaches are also available to help hone your technique. On ‘surfing safaris’, you can join a group where a local leader guides you to secret surf spots at various beaches. While Batu Bolong is over-run with surfers, Berawa Beach is preferred by those looking to surf in relative privacy.

  1. Romance the sea at Tanah Lot Temple

Tanah Lot is one of the most beautiful sea temples in Bali and the sunset views are nothing short of spectacular. In the evenings, you’ll also hear the temple priests perform worship to the accompaniment of gamelan music and devotional songs. At the Tanah Lot beach, you can see waves crashing against the rocks in the most dramatic fashion. There are numerous shrines within the vast complex – all definitely worth exploring.

  1. Watch the sunset at Echo Beach

The black sand Echo Beach is one of the best spots in Canggu to watch the shimmering sunset. Get a drink and munch on freshly barbecued fish as you gaze at the saffron sky. There’s a beautiful sea-view temple next to the beach called Pantai Baju Mejan. Echo Beach is also a popular surfing spot and has numerous surf schools.

  1. Take the kids to Finns Recreation Club

If you have kids along (or if you just like to have fun), don’t miss out on Finns Recreation Club. With numerous attractions like a water park, lap pool, tennis courts, bowling arena, trampoline, sports bar, and restaurants, you can easily spend an entire day here. A day pass lets you access the facilities of your choice.

  1. Ride a horse through the villages

Horse-riding is a great way to tour the picturesque beaches and villages of Canggu. The 2.5 hectare Bali Equestrian Centre houses 30 school horses and offers lessons from many international instructors. You can sign up for a day ride (children can sit on ponies) and explore the paddy fields surrounding the center. There is a restaurant and pool to help you cool off after the ride.

Canggu’s lovely countryside gives you a feeling of being in the ‘real’ Bali. And the narrow lanes are best navigated on a scooter or motorbike. You’ll enjoy riding along the rice paddy-rimmed path that connects Berawa and Batu Bolong locally dubbed the ‘Canggu shortcut’. When you get to Batu Bolong, don’t forget to pick up some souvenirs at the Love Anchors Bazaar. Canggu is also over-run with luxury resorts boasting enormous infinity pools.
